The country you are looking for is Hungary.

Hungary is a country with a long history dating back to the conquest of the Carpathian Basin by the Hungarian grand prince Árpád. It became a regional power and by the 15th century held great sway.
It has a close and interconnected history with neighbors Austria, falling under that family's ruling monarchy, the Habsburgs, at the start of the 18th century. A brief period of independence was ended with the Austria-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 which formally united the two countries into what would become known as the Austria-Hungary Empire which stretched from northern Italy to southern Poland.
That lasted until 1918 with their defeat in the First World War precipitating the break up of the empire with Hungary becoming an independent country. After World War Two, it fell under the control of the Soviet Union, a relationship that turned bloody when Soviet tanks and troops crushed the Hungarian Revolution of 1958 which resulted in the deaths of 3,000 Hungarian civilians.
Hungary would regain its independence in 1989 as the Soviet Union collapsed in on itself. In the present day, the country is home to over 9,700,000 people of which 98% are ethnic Hungarians.
