However, lacklustre engagement and persistent technical issues resulted in the game being removed from app stores by May 2025 and fully shut down in April 2026.

An arcade racing tie-in to the sim racing Project Cars franchise, Project Cars GO misread what fans wanted from the series. Its shallow mechanics and poor retention pushed it out of service in November 2021, which was only a few months after it was launched in March.

13. Titanfall: Assault
Titanfall: Assault was a real-time strategy mobile spin-off of the FPS Titanfall series. It featured action-packed matches where players dueled one another in multiplayer battles. The gam went live in August 2017, but its servers were shut down by July 2018, as interest in the game waned and much of the gameplay failed to match expectations.

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-Earth hoped to draw in fans of Tolkien’s expansive world. It offered an interesting turn-based collectible RPG and, to the developer's credit, filled a niche. However, the game quietly exited service within a year of its 2024 release, as players migrated to other online RPGs.

Mighty Doom was a roguelike shooter set in the famed Doom universe. It drew plenty of initial attention thanks to its brand and the game being the franchise's first approach to mobile. The unfortunate aspect was its gacha-leaning progression, which left a sour taste in many players' mouths. The game was launched in March 2023, but was quickly shut down in 2024.

10. Pokémon Rumble Rush
Pokémon Rumble Rush was an action-oriented Pokémon mobile game that, sadly, never clicked with a wide audience. It was the fifth installment in the Pokémon Rumble series and featured ambitious gameplay centered on moving between islands and defeating bosses. The game was launched worldwide in May 2019 and was shut down in July 2020.

9. Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator
Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator was a mobile title that many had high hopes for. It was the first installment in the decade-spanning franchise to be introduced to mobile devices, and offered players exciting RPG action. Despite everything going for it, the developers struggled to juggle between refining the game and continuing to produce events. This resulted in the game being shelved in March 2025 — a little over a year after it was released in January 2024.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer was a geolocation AR RPG based on The Witcher series. Its gameplay saw a darker, more hardcore experience, where players needed to explore the world and take down monsters. The game was launched in July 2021 and was shut down in June 2023 after failing to "live up to business expectations," according to the developers.

7. Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales
Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales, a story-driven puzzle game based on the hit Netflix series, was plagued with development issues from the start. It was released — after some delays — in December 2021. SEGA’s endless mobile runner, Sonic Runners, featuring Sonic and friends was, at the time, expected to be a success given the popularity in similar titles like Temple Run and Subway Surfers. Sadly, the game was retired by the company in July 2016 — only a year after it was released globally in June 2015.

5. Warcraft Rumble
Blizzard’s strategy tower defence mobile game, Warcraft Rumble, struggled extremely hard post-launch. The game eventually wound down operations despite heavy initial investment. In mid-2025, Blizzard announced that it had ceased further development of Warcraft Rumble and laid off the majority of the development team. This came nearly two years after the game's launch in November 2023.

4. Paladins Strike
Hi-Rez Studios brought Paladins to mobile platforms in 2018 with Paladins Strike. It was described as a free-to-play MOBA and hero shooter, which did attract a fair amount of players. However, by mid-2020, the servers were shut down as players drifted to other titles, and the mobile version failed to sustain a strong community.
