A new Borderlands Mobile game is in the works by Zynga, with Gearbox providing creative guidance.
On Thursday, April 9, Borderlands Mobile, an official game by Zynga and Gearbox, soft-launched in the US on the iOS platform, and it looks promising, as the game, even in the early test phase, offers more end-game content than Gearbox’s flagship and latest entry in the franchise, Borderlands 4.
!!BREAKING: Take Two and Zynga have just soft-launched 'Borderlands Mobile' on iOS platforms in a select few regions.

Borderlands Mobile is currently in the test phase in the US on iOS, and the test will run through April 28. While 2K, Zynga, or even Gearbox didn’t say anything about the game’s release date, after players learned of the game’s existence, a 2K spokesperson sent an official statement to various media outlets.
It said:
We are always exploring ways to introduce Borderlands to new audiences. Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Borderlands mobile project, with Gearbox providing creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history, and lore. We hope that players enjoy this new Borderlands experience and look forward to their feedback.
The game is currently available on the iOS App Store, and you can download and play it before the test ends on April 28. While the game is still in a very early stage of development under Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio and there are a lot of reused assets and story from previous games, it sure offers a lot, even in the early phase.
Here’s a look at the game modes the current test builds include:
- Campaign
- Tower of Terror
- Raid Modes
- Faction Wars
- Bounty
- Circle of Slaughter
- Psycholands
There’s also a Battle Pass system and such things that you would find in mobile games. What’s more interesting is the fact that the game does feature a weapon scrapping feature, upgrading, mod slotting, and such, which players have been requesting in the main games for years now.
That said, it seems Take Two Interactive is finally using Zynga, which they acquired in a massive $12.7 billion deal.
In case you don’t remember, after acquiring Zynga, Zelnick did say the following:
We believe we have the best collection of console and PC intellectual property in the interactive entertainment business and it’s basically nearly entirely un-exploited from mobile and free-to-play around the world. Zynga’s best-in-class studios can help us develop that property.
He had further explained how Zynga can fit in and expand its operations:
Their best-in-class free-to-play mobile publishing operations can bring that to consumers, delight those consumers and create recurrent consumer spending along the way. The list is endless and it’s early days. We’re just thrilled to have this opportunity to be able to work together and create what we’re certain will be of extraordinary value going forward.
That said, Borderlands Mobile’s Zynga help page also mentions an Android version of the game. We think the game will release on both Android and iOS platforms down the line.
