Many players are wondering whether Rockstar Games' upcoming blockbuster could eventually make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2.
The anticipation surrounding GTA 6 continues to reach unprecedented levels ahead of its November 19, 2026, release. The latest installment in the action-adventure franchise is set to arrive after over a decade since the release of GTA 5.
GTA 6 follows the story of a criminal couple, Jason and Lucia, and their law-breaking misdeeds across the state of Leonida. The game is expected to offer a much richer experience across its gameplay, visuals, and customization options.
While Rockstar has only officially confirmed the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S so far, there are certainly a few question marks surrounding a potential Switch 2 version.
What We Know About GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2
The latest wave of speculation stems from several industry insiders and leakers who have claimed that Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have explored bringing GTA 6 to the Nintendo Switch 2.
One rumor from a reliable source suggested that a Switch 2 version could be released after the game's initial launch.
Further speculation suggests that GTA 6 may potentially be ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the future, alongside a PC release. However, none of these claims have been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games.
Adding fuel to the speculation are previous comments from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick during a Q&A session with investors in 2025. He voiced his support for the Nintendo Switch 2, stating he felt "great optimism" about the latest hardware from the Japanese company. These comments have led many to believe that major franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto, could be brought to the platform.
What Reality Suggests About A Future Release
At the moment, there is no official announcement regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 version of GTA 6 — and, as hopeful as we try to be, it doesn't seem likely to happen given Rockstar's track record with the platform.
Let's take a look at the last installment in the GTA franchise, for example. GTA 5 was released in 2013 and has been released and re-released on multiple consoles over the years. The Enhanced version was launched in 2014 for the PS4, the Xbox One, and PC. Then, in 2022, the Expanded & Enhanced version was launched for the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. Yet, in all that time, Rockstar never brought GTA 5 to a Nintendo platform.
This doesn't exactly spell out a bright future for GTA 6. But it's not like the Nintendo Switch 2 is a small or irrelevant platform. The company has sold nearly 20 million units since the console was officially launched in mid-2025. It's undeniably a major player in how people choose to game. That said, it's a long shot for sure, but it's not exactly unrealistic for GTA 6 to eventually land on the Nintendo Switch 2, whenever that may be.
Performance Will Also Be An Issue
If we were to dive deeper into GTA 6's potential release on the Nintendo Switch 2, performance remains one of the biggest question marks.
The console is certainly more powerful than its 2017 predecessor. However, GTA 6 is expected to be one of the most technically demanding games ever released.
The console could potentially handle a scaled-down version of the game. Rockstar previously developed a scaled-down version of GTA 5 for the Xbox Series S. The download size is also a hurdle, as some reports suggest that GTA 6 may be over 600 GB. We remain skeptical that Rockstar would devote resources to such a complex port during the game's early post-launch period, considering it took the developers over a decade to develop GTA 6 itself.
Ultimately, Rockstar's current focus appears to be on delivering GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. It's more of a waiting game when it comes to the game's availability on other platforms.
