Here's a general game wiki that explains how to play the game:
How To Play Dead Rails?

In Dead Rails, your ultimate goal is to reach an 80 km distance to lower a bridge associated with the main progression.
As you begin the game, after you start a session, you will be tasked to sell stuff to purchase Coal that you can use to fuel your train.

During expeditions, you will find buildings and structures that you can explore to obtain resources and loot.
You can use them for your survival or sell them for money at checkpoints that you encounter every 10 km in the form of strongholds.

That being said, the game's time of the day decides enemy spawns as during the day, you can stop your train and explore the buildings and areas.
But when it is nighttime, it is best to be on the move as new enemy types spawn. These are Fast Zombies, Werewolves, and Vampires.

The general gameplay loop revolves around starting a run > looting and gathering resources and gear > gearing up and selling stuff to get money to purchase fuel and other resources > preparing up > starting new run.
