Someone Just Got GTA V Working on Mobile — And It’s Surprisingly Playable

It sounds impossible at first, but someone really has got GTA V running on a smartphone.

A recent clip shared in a now-deleted Reddit post showcases Grand Theft Auto V running on an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The gameplay isn’t actually a native mobile version of GTA V. Instead, the game is allegedly being run via the Xbox 360 emulator XeniOS, which essentially tricks the phone into behaving like an environment capable of launching the game.

This method relies heavily on powerful chipsets and advanced tools, which is probably why the latest, most powerful iPhone is being used.

The gameplay certainly is impressive. But, of course, it's far from perfect. From the clip alone, there are signs of dropped frames, choppy resolution, and a horrible audio blare.

Players have tried various times to develop a playable GTA V experience on mobile over the years, with most tests having mixed results. Some report playable framerates on flagship phones, while others struggle with stability, heat, and battery drain. Even in ideal conditions, compromises like reduced resolution and settings are often necessary to keep the game running "smoothly."

This all speaks to how incredibly complex GTA V is as a whole. Sustained performance of a game of its size and scale can be difficult without overheating or rapid battery loss. That said, the fact that a game originally designed for consoles, such as the PlayStation 3, can now be emulated on a handheld device speaks volumes about how powerful modern smartphones have become.

Although Rockstar Games has yet to announce any official mobile version of GTA V, experiments like this hint at a future where ports of newer titles in the franchise could become viable. Older titles in the GTA franchise, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, are available on mobile.
