JRPGs, otherwise known as Japanese role-playing games, have always been able to deliver unforgettable stories, stylish combat, emotional character arcs, and worlds you never want to leave. The good news is that mobile gaming now has a massive collection of JRPGs that feel as incredible as their console or PC counterparts. That said, here are 15 of the best JRPG mobile games that absolutely deserve your attention.
15 of the Best JRPG Mobile Games You Can Play Right Now
These games take you on one-of-a-kind adventures...
15. Dragon Quest VIII
Dragon Quest VIII is one of the best classic JRPG titles available today. The game captures everything fans love about the long-running Dragon Quest series, including its charming monster designs from Akira Toriyama (of Dragon Ball fame), cozy vibes, and traditional turn-based combat that still holds up incredibly well in spite of its age. Moreover, its massive world, memorable characters, and relaxing pacing make it perfect for players who want a more old-school RPG experience.

14. Chaos Rings III
Chaos Rings III is a lesser-known, but one of the more ambitious original JRPGs Square Enix ever released exclusively for mobile. We'll admit that the graphics may feel a little dated (the game was initially released in 2014), but it still feels surprisingly close to a handheld console RPG. It full-length story, expansive areas, and solid turn-based combat are quite decent.

13. Disgaea RPG
Disgaea RPG is a spin-off JRPG that brings the over-the-top humor and ridiculous action of the mainline Disgaea series to mobile. Its turn-based battles become unbelievably chaotic as characters start hitting absurd stat levels and unleashing outrageous attacks. The game fully embraces the series' goofy personality, which, if you ask us, makes it a fun change of pace from more serious RPGs.

12. Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is widely regarded as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, and the mobile version (interestingly labeled "Upgrade Ver.") lets players experience this masterpiece anywhere. The game's time-travel story remains emotional and clever decades later. On the other hand, the combat system feels smooth and fast-paced. Between the multiple endings, iconic soundtrack, lovable cast, and iconic art style, it's very easy to see why so many RPG fans still treat Chrono Trigger as a top-tier game.

11. Ex Astris
Ex Astris stands out because it genuinely feels like a premium sci-fi JRPG rather than another live-service gacha title. The combat system mixes real-time action with timing-based mechanics, which makes the battles feel strategic without becoming too chaotic. We also like its beautiful world design and strong focus on storytelling. As a whole, it's a fun and satisfying game that can easily suck you into its vibrant atmosphere.

10. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a 2020 turn-based game that looks absolutely stunning on mobile thanks to its beautiful self-described "HD-2D" art style. The game expands the world of the original Octopath Traveler, but with darker storytelling and strategic combat. Every battle feels tactical thanks to the game's unique combat mechanics, while the pixel art, combined with its immersive storyline, creates one of the best-looking JRPGs on phones.

9. Fire Emblem Heroes
Fire Emblem Heroes is a tactical RPG that compresses its gameplay into shorter battles, but it does so without completely sacrificing strong strategy elements. Positioning, weapon advantages, and team composition still matter a lot, especially in tougher stages of the game. Fire Emblem Heroes is, if you couldn't tell by its name, a mobile spin-off of the Fire Emblem franchise, so fans of the series will appreciate the appearance of many familiar characters and mechanics.

8. Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe (yes, its name is actually spelled like that) carries over a lot of the experimentation the SaGa series is known for. Set 300 years after the events of Romancing SaGa 3, the story takes place in the city of Vanguard, and players must save the world from danger. Battles focus heavily on skill inheritance, formations, and strategy rather than simple, straightforward attacks. We think the game does a good job of paying homage to the series by featuring familiar characters and elements such as "OverDrive".

7. Epic Seven
Epic Seven features gorgeous 2D anime visuals with classic turn-based RPG combat that feels like a complete package. Every character and background art looks really detailed. On top of that, the game's tactical PvP and World Arena modes are incredibly competitive, which makes it great for those looking for a hardcore RPG experience. Epic Seven is a gacha title, but in our opinion, it doesn't feel too grindy, and the reward systems are fairly balanced.

6. SaGa Frontier Remastered
SaGa Frontier Remastered delivers a wonderfully unique JRPG experience that's based on the classic SaGa series. With its multiple protagonists, nonlinear storytelling, and unconventional progression systems, this remastered version of the classic 1997 title improves the original with updated visuals, quality-of-life upgrades, and restored content. The storyline is unique simply because it allows you to explore the stories of eight heroes, which makes for an experience unlike any other.

5. Atelier Resleriana
Atelier Resleriana brings the cozy crafting-focused gameplay of the popular Atelier series to mobile. Now, it does all that while maintaining the franchise's relaxing atmosphere, so don't worry about the game losing its unique approach to the genre. Gathering materials, crafting powerful items, and bonding with characters all remain the heart of the experience. It may feel less intense than some JRPGs, but that makes it perfect for players who want something calmer and more wholesome.

4. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is one of the greatest tactical JRPGs ever made. It's a phenomenal blend of deep strategy gameplay with a mature political story that's full of betrayal, war, and memorable characters. Spearheaded by Designer Hiroyuki Ito, the game's flexible job system gives players tons of freedom to build unique teams. The game's challenging grid-based battles also still feel pretty one-of-a-kind even years later.

3. Granblue Fantasy
Granblue Fantasy is a 2014 title that became a massive hit thanks to its huge world, endearing roster of characters, and constant stream of content updates. With the game's sound design headed by Nobuo Uematsu and character design by Hideo Minaba, the game has a very traditional, fantasy-like JRPG atmosphere that we personally love. Granblue Fantasy also features turn-based combat, airship adventures, and dramatic story arcs.

2. Monster Hunter Stories
Monster Hunter Stories takes the monster-hunting universe and transforms it into a colorful turn-based JRPG focused on raising monsters instead of slaying them. The story follows the story of three young friends after they hatch a mysterious egg to find a baby wyvern known as a Rathalos. The creature collecting and bonding systems make the game feel almost like Pokémon mixed with more traditional JRPG mechanics. As a whole, the game has a much lighter tone, and its charming visuals also make it much more approachable for newcomers.

1. Fate/Grand Order
Fate/Grand Order is arguably one of the biggest and longest-running mobile JRPGs in the world for good reason. While its combat is fairly simple, the real strength of the game comes from its massive, sweeping story arcs, emotional character writing, and huge roster of heroes drawn from mythology and history. Some chapters genuinely feel like full visual novels, and its voice cast — which includes the likes of Nobunaga Shimazaki and Ayako Kawasumi — makes the game feel truly immersive.
