The mobile gaming industry moves fast, and not every project makes it across the finish line. Over the years, plenty of promising mobile games have been announced, tested in soft launch, or even shown off with gameplay before abruptly or quietly disappearing. That said, we've put together a list of 10 mobile games that were ultimately canceled before they ever saw a full release. They range from ambitious spin-offs of major franchises to experimental new ideas that never quite worked out.
10 Mobile Games That Were Canceled Before They Ever Launched
These games never crossed the finish line...
10. Clash Quest
Clash Quest was one of several experimental spin-offs set in Supercell’s hugely popular Clash universe. Unlike Clash of Clans or Clash Royale, this game leaned into puzzle and strategy gameplay, where players launched units across grid-based battlefields to defeat enemies and bosses. The game entered soft launch in a few regions and received several updates while the team tried to refine its progression system. Despite the unique mechanics, Supercell ultimately canceled the project in 2022 after deciding it didn't meet the "very high standards" they set for their games.

9. Transformers: Heavy Metal
Niantic worked with Hasbro to develop Transformers: Heavy Metal, an AR mobile game similar to Pokémon GO. It would have allowed players to battle with Transformers in the real world, with the storyline centered around a Decepticon invasion of Earth. Despite the game conducting several beta tests, the game was scrapped in June 2022 before it was able to receive a full release.

8. Titanfall: Frontline
Respawn and Nexon were developing a free-to-play mobile card strategy game that featured pilots, Titans, and real-time battles from the popular Titanfall series. The game was announced and even had a soft launch on Android in 2016, with a full release expected later in the year. However, the game was canceled before a global launch was made a reality. The developers reasoned that Titanfall: Frontline did not "deliver the intense action-packed gameplay synonymous with Titanfall."

7. Final Fantasy XI R
Square Enix partnered with Nexon in March 2015 to create a mobile remake of the classic MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. The project aimed to modernize the game for smartphones at a time when mobile gaming was booming. Final Fantasy XI R was certainly an ambitious project, and many fans of the series were excited for it. Sadly, after years of little to no publicly available development updates or a clear roadmap, the developers officially confirmed in 2021 that the game had been canceled.

6. Star Wars: Rivals
Star Wars: Rivals was an arena-based shooter, developed by Disney and Lucasfilm, that featured iconic Star Wars heroes and villains, such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It had a soft launch in Australia and New Zealand. However, it was canceled in September 2018 following issues with monetization, lacklustre gameplay, and low engagement with the community.

5. Clash Heroes
Clash Heroes was perhaps the most ambitious of the scrapped Clash spin-offs. Instead of strategy or puzzle gameplay, this project aimed to turn the Clash universe into a cooperative action RPG. Players would control heroes directly in real time, explore colorful environments, fight waves of enemies, and take on bosses alongside friends. Unfortunately, the game's development proved challenging, and the team eventually decided to shelve the project. While some ideas were reportedly explored for other Clash titles, Clash Heroes itself never made it past the concept and prototype stage.

4. Battlefield Mobile
Electronic Arts and Industrial Toys were developing Battlefield Mobile as a full-scale mobile version of the iconic first-person shooter franchise. The game even entered regional testing with a host of large maps and classic Battlefield game modes. Despite the promising features, EA canceled the project in 2023, with the move called a "strategic decision."

3. Untitled Warcraft Mobile Game
An untitled World of Warcraft spin-off mobile game was reportedly canceled in 2022 after Blizzard "torpedoed" it for an unspecified reason. The game, which was codenamed "Neptune," had been in development for three years. Due to the secretive nature of its development, the exact gameplay, storyline, and features that were set to debut in the game are unknown.

2. Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, a GPS-based action-RPG mobile game, featured exciting 3D battles, world exploration, and an extension of the expansive Kingdom Hearts storyline set in the realm of Scala ad Caelum. The game garnered a significant following over the course of its development, with expectations riding high. Sadly, Square Enix announced in May 2025 that the game had been shelved after it was believed that it "would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time."

1. Clash Mini
Clash Mini was easily one of the most anticipated Clash spin-offs. The game featured miniature versions of classic Clash characters battling automatically on a small chess-like board. Players would strategically place units such as the Mini P.E.K.K.A and Barbarian before each round, then watch the action play out in quick tactical battles. It spent years in soft launch while Supercell experimented with gameplay systems, monetization, and progression. Despite building a passionate fanbase, Supercell canceled Clash Mini in 2024 after concluding it "was a good game but not the game that would ultimately fulfill our dream." However, elements of the game remain active in Clash Royale's Merge Tactics mode.
