NieR: Automata has sold over 10 million copies, and Square Enix might have just teased the sequel during the game's 9th anniversary livestream.
2017's cult-classic action role-playing game and Yoko Taro's masterpiece, NieR: Automata, has shipped and digitally sold over 10 million copies, and while that is a big achievement to celebrate, we may have a much bigger thing on our way: the next entry and a possible sequel to NieR: Automata.
On Friday, February 20, Square Enix celebrated NieR: Automata's 9th anniversary via a livestream that covered various projects and provided updates on the NieR franchise.

At the end of the NieR: Automata 10 million copies sold commemorative PV, we received a teaser text stating, "NieR: Automata to be continued..."
There is no denying that after the massive success of NieR: Automata, fans have been asking for a sequel for a long time. To the extent that some fans started taking it out on Square Enix.
The teaser might have just confirmed the long-awaited sequel to NieR: Automata. What is even more interesting and somewhat assuring is the fact that Square Enix specifically mentioned NieR: Automata to be continued and not the NieR franchise.
To further back it up, Geoff Keighley took it to X (formerly Twitter) to repost the screenshot with the "NieR: Automata to be continued..." message on his handle.

That said, the Summer Game Fest 2026 is right around the corner as it kicks off on June 5 at the Dolby Theatre in LA, and there's a high chance we may see more of NieR there.
